Because an Unemployed Librarian Made Some Really Good Music

Day #34: Washed Out – “Hold Out”

Here’s another one of those musicians that found a fast rise to success. It’s also another one of those performers where you think it’s a whole band, but turns out it only refers to one guy (and the occasional session players). The guy with the short hair singing in this video is Georgia native, Ernest Greene, AKA Washed Out. Back in June 2009, he completed his Masters of Library Science,  but like every other hopeless new graduate, he couldn’t find a job to go with the degree. In the meantime, he kept busy making the music that would eventually form the debut EPs released that fall to a heap of critical praise. Two years later, in early 2011, he was signing to Sub Pop, releasing his debut album, Within and Without, and touring the world. Oh, and his song, “Feel It All Around” is used in the opening credits of Portlandia.

It’s the stuff that dreams are made of. And probably honorary doctorates, too.
