Georgetown University was not the first Catholic school I’d ever attended (“St. Mark’s Kindergarten, we’re all here!”), but it was the first place where I was surrounded by devout Catholics. During my first year, I was crossing campus to class when I passed a woman with a dark mark on her forehead. I was about to point it out to her, that she had some dirt on her forehead, but ignored the compulsion and went on my way. That was my introduction to Lent.
