Riders of the DC metro might have noticed a new development in recent weeks… the presence of armed police officers on guard at the stations. Sometimes only one, sometimes in groups of two or three approaching with a canine unit. This took me by surprise the other day as I was getting off at the McPherson Square metro one morning, and counted at least five officers (and one canine) having passed me between setting foot on the train and getting on the escalator a few feet away. Today, there was one. And one at Greenbelt this evening. Even with the McCarthy-esque Bush administration out, the surprise is the new fixture of institutionalized paranoia.
Don’t make any sudden movements.
