In my freshman year of college, I took an English class that was tied into the art department. The notion being that the writing would be linked to the Art History courses concurrently being taken. Our first assignment was to write an essay that answered the question, “What is art?” It wouldn’t be until years later that I would realize what a stupid exercise this is, to define something so subjective as an act of creativity.
At the Indianapolis Museum of Art this weekend, I came across a quote that might be an appropriate answer for some (disregard the geographic mention) to the less limiting question… “Why art?”
