While it has been a remarkably refreshing last couple of days outside of Dodge hanging out with the family in Ye Old Souf, it was because of this, plus inevitable downside of living in a tree-filled neighborhood during a wicked thunderstorm the day after returning, that I was without access to the instant-gratification technology to wish Steph McD a timely happy birthday the way us young people do… on the Internets!
And it’s an important year, too. 30. The end of one decade and the start of another. A few of the gang have already reached that milestone, and more will before the year is out. Hopefully, in between all this Kim may actually reveal what symbol of nerd culture is tattooed on her thigh. I’m not sure what to make of 30 yet, except some rather noticeable differences in the way we approach things a little more headstrong now with all these years under our belt, achieving some of the things that at 25, we had been probably unnecessarily freaking out about. McD did express some trepidation about it, but I can’t offer much more reassurance to say that very few of us have it all really figured out at this point. We’re still learning, still feeling our way, but we can do it with a little more confidence than before. McD’s got a pretty good head on her shoulders, and although none of us might ever get around to those projects that in the end might be ground-breaking legacies, if only for a laugh, we might at least say that in the end, we’re pretty satisfied with our lot.
In honor of McD’s birthday, I was hoping to find a meaningful music video, not having posted any in a while. By posting Those Darlins’ fun live track, “Wild One,” I’m killing two birds with one stone, since party conversation with Compton about shows compelled me to suggest them. As luck would have it, they hit DC and Cleveland in September. Be on the look out, y’all.
Oh, and a belated public happy birthday greeting to thee, McD!
