Day #11: Ramona & the Swimsuits – “Karen’s Dad”
Okay, pay real close attention here, because I am about to let you in on some awesome news.
Are you ready?!
Leslie & the Lys are going on tour! Weeeeeee!!!
Yup, US tour dates are booked for the next two months, though a few more shows are still being finalized, so be sure to check ’em out. This year, the Gem Sweater Diva is joined by fellow Ames, Iowa nerd collectives, Pennyhawk (in which Leslie also plays drum) and Ramona & the Swimsuits, who appear in today’s music video selection, performing “Karen’s Dad.”
If you aren’t familiar with the aforementioned bands, consider this video an easy screening test. If you get a laugh, get yourself a ticket to one of the shows. If not, don’t. Simple as that. See, it’s not that these are really great musicians or anything, but they really go out of their way to entertain an audience. If you go to one of these shows and see someone standing around, twiddling their thumbs or mindlessly swaying the way they do at other, more traditional shows, you can be sure they didn’t take that easy screening test. These are the kind of shows where you’re encouraged to be just as nerdy a participant as the performers. To be totally uninhibited. Because really, who’s going to judge you when a heavy-set girl in 80s mom makeup and gold spandex is dancing in front of you on a hydraulic lift?
My friends and I loved bands like this when we were in high school. They embodied that old punk ethic of making music accessible. You could be in a band (and a successful band, at that) even if you couldn’t sing or play for shit. It was just enough that everyone could have fun with it. Admittedly though, it’s a little odd now that I’m going on 30 and the people in these bands are probably pushing somewhere around the same age, still doing what we thought was so hilarious in high school.
