Day #35: Whitney Houston – “Saving All My Love for You”
News broke yesterday that singer Whitney Houston was found dead in a Beverly Hills Hotel at the age of 48. Cause of death is still yet-to-determined, so I won’t start cursing Bobby B until the results are in.
Even though she made headlines in the last couple years for drug arrests, domestic spats, and eccentric behavior, it was still shocking news. I saw her in an interview over the holidays in which she talked about upcoming projects, something that seemed to be an indication of a life in turn-around. In her prime, Whitney Houston was one of the best, and one of the most elegant, which may have to do with being brought up among soul singer royalty. Dionne Warrick was a cousin. Aretha Franklin was her godmother. And gospel/backup singer Cissy Houston was her mother.
This was one of Whitney’s songs I liked when I was a kid. Her mother has a cameo – she’s the woman in the white dress in the video’s opening. Looking back, this video looks like something that was inspired by Newport cigarette ads. I still love the song.
