Day #79: Yellow Magic Orchestra – “Technolopolis”
I started my new job today. Because I went from one association to another, a lot of things are like the old job. But, the new place has about one fourth the staff and what seems to be more generous funding. Before, we were at the mercy of college and university department budgets, and now we’re just at the mercy of the federal government. Sure, that might not sound any better, but while it may be hard for liberal arts programs to avoid unrelenting scrutiny when administrations need to “cut! cut! cut!” we are are at least able to say that we deal in the mechanisms for law enforcement and justice planning, which is a benefit to the states. Because, you know, crime really sucks.
The new place is exactly what I’ve been looking for: they have a small staff, it’s a relaxed environment, the association is policy and practice-focused, and best of all, they’re making the most of modern technology, guided by the belief that most of your job can be done from anywhere you have access to a computer and phone. Isn’t that precisely what the innovators always envisioned? Just like they told us on the Spaceship Earth ride at Epcot!
Now, I’m going to have to learn a lot of these little technological conveniences that make that mobility possible. But, more importantly, I’m going to have to figure out the art of working from home without distraction.
