Day #84: Bikini Kill – “Suck My Left One”
In the course of doing some major cleaning around the house, Phil found my old stacks of Thrasher magazine. I bought like four year’s worth of issues from a guy in town and he threw in some copies of another magazine called Vice. Vice always had ads by American Apparel, the LA-based clothing company, on the back of its magazines. This is the company that boasts sweatshop-free manufacturing.
In one issue, there was a full-page ad about immigration reform, urging action on something Bush said in his 2005 State of the Union address about not being “content with laws that punish hardworking people who want to provide for their families…”
Well, that’s pretty noble, yeah? But, I guess maybe American Apparel felt like they couldn’t sell clothes to hip youngsters without exploiting someone! Or, at least that is the impression I get because, when they’re not devoting space to political discussion, the rest of the ads look like this…
Seriously. Does this ad make you think of anything but a stink finger?
