Day # 108: Supergrass – “Alright”
What a shitty year it’s been for movies. There are only two movies (so far) that I have/had any intention of going to see: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (opening in limited release this coming weekend), and Pirates! The Band of Misfits, the claymation epic based on Gideon Defoe’s outstanding (and short!) fiction series. (Defoe also wrote the screenplay). We saw that one this weekend.
I forgot what it’s like to be in a theater, surrounded by small children. You can’t really hush them when they get loud, or start talking or running around the theater halfway through the movie, since the normal standards of etiquette don’t really apply. And, I suppose if we knew better, we would have gone to the latest show to avoid that. Of course, the reason kids were probably losing interest by the 30 minute mark was because they couldn’t understand the rather complex story about a Pirate Captain so desperate to win Pirate of the Year, much less be able to read Mr. Bobo’s note cards. But then again, this movie wasn’t based on a children’s book.
Overall reaction: More, please. (Sorry, kids)
Valuable Movie Wisdom: “You can’t just say Argh! at the end of every sentence and expect everything to be alright.”
Advice: Read the books. All of them. They’re like 60 pages each and the books are the size of a jumbo index card and read like a brilliant British sitcom. Plus, you know… it’s pirates.
Miscellaneous: I hope this sparks renewed interest in British rockers, Supergrass, who’s track, “Alright,” from the excellent I Should Coco album, plays during the ending credits.
