Day #154: Tape Deck Bros. – “Science Fiction”
Perhaps it is inevitable that a movie almost 35 years old should be revisited. (On a side note, we saw previews for a Total Recall revamp). But, the Alien saga continues with Prometheus, the first of what will probably be several prequel installments, because that’s the way things go now.
See it. If you are at least remotely aware that any of the Alien movies involved aliens (duh!), a spaceship, and a bastard of a corporation, you’ve met the prerequisites. And if you didn’t before, you do now. So, you have no excuses.
Though surprisingly not a terrible tale, this one lacks Ridley Scott and company’s traditional devotion to pacing and detail. No longer the stunning gothic setting (even Geiger’s influences are substantially scaled back), nor is it so thrilling paced. And, it offers no contrast of eerie minimalism with a narrative that unfolds like an orchestra as it did in movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Sunshine. This one initially struggles to even keep the beat.
Overall Response: Not bad (better if the non-alien nemeses weren’t so phoned-in).
Favorite Movie Wisdom: Not to give anything away, but as it turns out, the identity of God can not simply be understood as dog spelled backwards. But, things might have been a whole lot better for everyone if that was the case.
OMG It’s…!!!: Glad to see some fresh faces on screen. More Idris Elba, please (aka, Stringer Bell).
Miscellaneous: I couldn’t have been the only one who thought “Dr. Evil!” when Waverly makes his first appearance, or switched to Yohurt from Spaceballs when he gets his first closeup.
