Day # 176: The Growlers – “Feeling Good”
I caught an episode of Aaron Sorkin’s Newsroom for the first time last night. It opened to this scene, where news reporter Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) is forced by a panel moderator to respond to the loaded question: “Why is America the greatest country in the world?” It’s probably just about the best introduction to the show (though starting on that high of a note meant the rest of the show was less interesting, except that Sam Watterson appears in rare form, losing his temper several times). The sad thing is that, like the billions of inspirational quotes posted to Facebook on any given day, people may applaud the sentiment (I do), but never really back it up with more than applause. Did any of those people who quoted Steve Jobs after he died make any major life changes?
Unfortunately, the conversation can’t even really get started in McAvoy’s case. Not really. Because to ever say that the United States isn’t the greatest country in the world to the people that don’t already think so, that’s like spouting a string of words most foul. And, all that shouting down can be really exhausting.
